“Gathered in the Holy Spirit and empowered by the Holy Eucharist, the Catholic Community of St. Rose embraces our mission to know and to teach our faith, to proclaim and witness the Gospel through Word, Sacrament, and Prayer and to serve others with hope and love as disciples of Jesus Christ.”
Consider registering to attend the 2025 Pastoral Care Retreat sponsored by the Diocese of Trenton Office of Pastoral Life & Mission on May 7, 2025 at San Alfonso Retreat House in Long Branch. Attached is a flyer. You can find more information and the registration link at www.dioceseoftrenton.org/pastoral-care .
During this Jubilee Year in which we are focusing on hope, our theme for the retreat is “Holding onto Hope: Supporting Mental Health with Pastoral Care.” As pastoral ministers, you may be surprised to know that one of every four or five people we encounter likely struggles with some form of anxiety, depression or other mental health difficulty. The Bishops of the U.S. have challenged all persons in ministry to become more aware, to form our attitudes and understandings, and to spot the signs of anxiety and depression in ourselves and others. Our parishes can play an important part in building awareness of mental health issues among all Catholics, overcoming the stigma associated with seeking help and getting treatment, and spiritually supporting resilience among those who suffer and their families. There are a whole host of easy-to-use resources available for use by parishes. Our speaker is Deacon Ed Shoener from the Diocese of Scranton, who serves as President of the Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers. Deacon Ed comes to us with first-hand knowledge of the impacts of mental health struggles and the host of simple ways that parishes and parish ministers can make a difference.
I hope you will consider joining us on May 7th. This retreat is open to anyone working in pastoral ministry. It will be most especially helpful to those working in caring ministries with youth and young adults, married couples, parents and families, support groups, the sick or homebound, and those grieving losses.
A federal school choice bill has been introduced on Capitol Hill with genuine prospects for success! Ask congress to pass the Educational Choice for Children Act by using the QR code on the flyer or click here to take action and contact your United States Senators and House of Representatives today to ask them to support the ECCA and sign on as co-sponsors of the bill.
Supported by our own Bishop David O'Connell, the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA) is designed to expand educational opportunities for low and middle-income families by using tax credit scholarship programs that have already proven successful in many states.
You can view a one page summary of the bill HERE.
Take a look at the USCCB’s official response to the introduction of the bill, which includes a letter of support written by Bishop David O’Connell, Chair of the Committee on Catholic Education of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, and Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton. What is a Jubilee Year?
A Holy Year or Jubilee is a time of special graces, pilgrimage, prayer, repentance, and acts of mercy, based on the Old Testament tradition of a jubilee of rest, forgiveness, and renewal.
(Lev. 25: 10-15) It is also a time to visit designated churches and shrines, recite special prayers, go to confession, and receive Communion to receive a plenary indulgence. The aim of a Holy Year is holiness of life. It is convoked to strengthen faith, encourage works of charity, and foster a consistent living of the faith.
